The fabric of the Cathedral is now in dire need of restoration. Recent expert architectural inspections have identified severe problems threatening the tower, the spire and the external and internal stonework. Parts of the structure are now officially described as “unstable”.

The need is pressing. An appeal is being launched to raise more than €8,000,000 (more than €8 million) for vital restoration work. The fund will be ring-fenced for this work only – it will not be used for running expenses. The Restoration Appeal aims to meet its target of Euro 8 million by end-2021.

An Appeal Committee in aid of the restoration of the Pro-Cathedral has been formed composed of like-minded, distinguished Maltese and foreign residents who have Malta’s cultural heritage at heart and who consider the preservation of this handsome building, which is so symbolic of Anglo-Maltese relations over the last two centuries or more, as vitally important. “Save the Valletta Skyline” is an Appeal which everybody living in Malta or abroad who has memories of this outstanding cathedral in Maltese cultural heritage should feel inspired to support.
